LifeRing comes to Paris!

Kathleen Gargan, former LifeRing Executive Director and current board member, is on an extended visit to Paris, France, and will be hosting a weekly information table/informal LifeRing meeting in a Starbucks in that city starting Sunday, Nov. 25, at 10:30 a.m. and continuing through the end of December. She writes:

“I’m ready set up a temporary meeting in paris – I’ve found a Starbucks that has several little privacy corners, and have visited it at the time I would like to hold  the meeting. (10:30 am Sunday) it’s fairly empty at this time. I plan to sit there for an hour on Sunday mornings with a placard that says both LifeRing and Cercle de vie.”

What is recovery? A new definition

The US federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration offers some thoughts.

First, it lists four main cornerstones for a life in recovery:

• Health: overcoming or managing one’s disease(s) or symptoms—for example, abstaining from use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and non-prescribed medications if one has an addiction problem—and for everyone in recovery, making informed, healthy choices that support physical and emotional wellbeing.
• Home: a stable and safe place to live;
• Purpose: meaningful daily activities, such as a job, school, volunteerism, family caretaking, or creative endeavors, and the independence, income and resources to participate in society; and
• Community: relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope.
Informed choice is part of the self-empowerment of Lifering.

SAMHSA’s definition has other elements congenial to Lifering, too.

Apologies for Website Woes

Regular visitors to LifeRing.org may have noticed a good deal of unavailability recently. Anyone familiar with “simple” updates of a computer system will sympathize. We believe that things are now back to normal and stable. Thanks for your patience and BIG thanks to Karen I., our hard-working (and very persistent, thank goodness) IT coordinator.

Website will be Off-line Temporarily on 11/11 for System Maintenance

A head’s up: the LifeRing website will be down for a few hours on Nov. 11. We’re upgrading something and it requires saving and re-loading the site’s content. If all goes well, it won’t take terribly long.
