The first LifeRing meeting in Chicago started in March of 2019. It went online due to COVID in, I think, March of 2020. That meeting will stay online but we'll start a new in-person meeting at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in March of 2023  -- there's something in March. The original meeting was started in order to give folks an additional option when seeking to overcome addiction. There are many, many AA meetings in the Chicago area and many people find them helpful. There are also a fair number of SMART Recovery meetings; in fact, I'm a SMART Recovery facilitator. People in LifeRing meetings here often attend an AA and/or SR meeting. However, LifeRing is different from both so it's good to offer more choices. We decided to start the in-person LifeRing meeting because some people don't like going online.

I find it interesting that when I started facilitating for SMART, almost everyone who came either came due to word of mouth or some sort of websearch. Now, I would say the majority or close to are referred by their therapist. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that at least some of these therapists are folks who have come to the meetings I facilitate. With the LifeRing meeting here, the vast majority of attendees heard about LifeRing from attending my SMART Recovery meetings, though from Over time, I think that will change.
