Be Kind To Your Liver!

On March 15, 2019, I attended a celebration of life gathering for a bar buddy who, after another long night drinking at Tradr Sam’s, fell to his death down his own stairs. We found him 4 or 5 days later. I raised my last cocktail in his honor during the memorial. I loved that guy, but I didn’t want that to be that guy. 

It wasn't that easy. Two weeks after my final drink, I blew up. Imagine Violet Beauregarde in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Like that, but instead of blue — I was yellow. A very disturbing, bilious yellow. On April Fools Day, I was admitted to SF General’s ER. The joke was on me. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis. Don’t be this gal.

Avoiding excessive consumption of processed foods, saturated fats, and sugary drinks can help prevent fatty liver disease and promote overall liver health
  1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water supports liver function and helps flush out toxins from the body.
  1. Exercise Regularly: Engaging in regular physical activity not only supports overall health but also promotes liver function by aiding in weight management and reducing the risk of fatty liver disease.

LifeRing hosts a focus meeting for people in recovery who are also diagnosed with health issues resulting from substance use disorders. The Liver Spot is the first of its kind:  built on the LifeRing “How Was Your Week” (HWYW) check-in  format, this special meeting offers an opportunity for open patient-to-patient knowledge exchange and supports an average of 50 people every week with a core group of 30.
