Working Together for Good!

November brings cooler temperatures and the season of gratitude and thanksgiving. It’s a time for reflection, kindness, and sometimes stress, as we navigate our individual challenges. Today, November 15, marks the 40th anniversary of National Philanthropy Day (NPD) — a day that celebrates working together for the common good.

Philanthropy takes many forms: charitable giving, volunteering, and countless acts of kindness. On this day, every gesture of generosity is recognized and appreciated. National Philanthropy Day was founded in the 1980s by philanthropist and fundraising professional Douglas Freeman. The first celebration was held in 1986 after President Reagan proclaimed November 15 as National Philanthropy Day. Canada officially recognized the day permanently in 2012, and since then, communities around the world have joined in honoring the spirit of giving.

This day highlights the vital services nonprofits provide and acknowledges the profound impact philanthropy has on society’s fabric.

At LifeRing Secular Recovery, we are fortunate to be operated almost entirely by volunteers. We currently have 119 convenors who generously donate their time and experience each week to lead LifeRing meetings — a true testament to the power of giving and community support.

National Philanthropy Day is an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of giving and to recognize how philanthropy strengthens recovery communities and improves lives every day. Thank you to all who make this possible!

How will you honor the spirit of philanthropy this season? We invite you to share your thoughts or acts of kindness with the LifeRing community.
