Pre-Event Planning & Logistics
Before heading to the event, make sure you have the logistical basics covered:
- Weather & Backup Plans: If the event is outdoors, check if there is a rain date or a severe weather backup location.
- Supply Check: Clarify exactly what you need to supply versus what the venue provides. Specifically ask: Will tables and chairs be supplied? *
- Recruit Backup: If possible, find another "LifeRinger" to assist you with the table.
Materials Checklist
Gather these items before heading out to ensure a smooth setup:
- The Essentials: * Table and chairs (if not supplied by the venue).
- A simple tablecloth (unless supplied, event tables usually show their wear and use).
- Table Attraction: * Candy (A small bowl of candy is a great, low-pressure way to encourage people to pause at your table and start a conversation!).
- Handouts:
- Books for display
- EYSS pamphlets
- History flier - optional
- Local flier or bullet -point document with local meeting days and times
Be well versed with:
- The "3-S" Philosophy
LifeRing fundamental principles: Sobriety, Secularity, and Self-Empowerment. - The “A” and the “S” Conflict
Imagine inside you there is the “A” (the addicted self) and the “S” (the sober self). - 90 Second LifeRing introduction
- Sobriety Policy Statement
The following resources are helpful for being prepared to answer questions
- Frequently Asked Questions.
- LifeRing Overview. A couple of copies of this could be helpful. You can skip the cover or print in B&W. This could serve as a quick reference if you get a question like “Do you have an email group specifically for dual diagnosis individuals.” Don’t assume you’ll have a good cell signal to quickly look something up on Lifering.org.
Table Setup & Display
When it is time to set up, focus on making the table look professional, inviting, and easy to navigate.
- Signage Tip: If you do not have a banner or sign, LifeRing posters can be used prominently at your table.
- Literature Layout: Place EYSS pamphlets with local contact info in an easy-to-grab location on the table.
- Book Display: Set up your display books prominently to catch people's eyes.
- Local flier or Bullet point document (easily customizable with local meeting and contact information) - professionals appreciate the format that allows for a quick review. Can be sent in any format you need.
- LifeRing History_Event Flyer.pdf - access with your LifeRing.org account
- Wind & Crowd Control: If you aren't using rigid pamphlet holders, make sure to have some kind of paperweights available so your literature doesn't blow away or get messy (especially important for outdoor events!).
- Small tabletop easels can be used to maximize space.
