1 in 5: Mental Health Awareness in May

Illustration of brain with heart | LifeRing supports mental healthMay is National Mental Health Awareness Month

1 in 5 people will experience mental health challenge during their lifetime and everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. After living through a seemingly endless pandemic, many people are realizing that stress, isolation, and uncertainty have taken a toll on their well-being.

Mental health is something everyone should care about. LifeRing offers meetings for people in recovery who have also been diagnosed with co-occurring disorders. Here are additional resources to consider during National Mental Health Awareness.

May has been recognized as National Mental Awareness Month since 1949. On April 30, 2014, President Barack Obama proclaimed it official. The President called upon “citizens, government agencies, organizations, health care providers, and research institutions to raise mental health awareness and continue helping Americans live longer, healthier lives.”  LifeRing has taken up this challenge and now offers weekly online meetings for people diagnosed with co-occurring disorders.

We invite you to explore other resources:

Mental Health America (MHA): Mental Health Tests

The MHA offers online screening tests to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition . Tests include:

      Depression  •  Psychosis  •  PTSD   •  Addiction  •  Bipolarity  •  Anxiety

(I tested “Addiction” and it’s likely I have an “Alcohol or Substance Use Problem.” That about sums it up!)

National Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA):  Free National Mental Health Awareness Month Resources and Webinars

The National Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has created a mental health portal featuring daily events, webinars, and SAMHSA support resources.
